World Readable
2012
unknownj
It's important that somebody tell me what the telnet commands are to make something world-readable. I think it's "chmod 774 directoryname" and "chmod 775 directoryname/*" or something, but I really quite need to know for sure before I start doing it....

It depends on exactly what you are trying to do and on what the user will want to do with the file. If they really only need to read then "chmod 774" is fine for both file and directory, if you want to allow the world to cd into the directory then chmod 775 will allow that. Be aware that you have given all members of your group rwx permissions. Do you trust them? If not chmod 744 on the files and 755 on the directory (see above) to be safe .

WARNING: This is from memory & I haven't played with unix for > 5 years. So don't blame me if it all ends in tears.

774 is :
Public - Read
Group - Read, Write, Execute
Owner - Read, Write, Execute

744 is :
Public - Read
Group - Read
Owner - Read, Write, Execute

444 is :
Public - Read
Group - Read
Owner - Read (a bad thing?)
