Okay, going back on my earlier "Not saying much on the world cup" stance, I should point this out - the USA are playing some really great football against Portugal. The Portugese are a great team, but the USA and really playing excellently against them. I said, eight years ago, that this would happen - when they held the world cup in America, I said that it would get more kids into soccer, and this is the result - an actual world class side, by the looks of things. I'm impressed - I genuinely hope they do really well, because that would further encourage people to play the sport. I'd personally love to see the Americans produce a winning team sometime, it would make a nice change.

And they just scored again - this is looking good, 2-0 up in the first half hour.....

When it comes down to it, there aren't really any team sports that the US and England can compete in - American Football isn't something we're especially good at (although I did at one point follow some of our teams a bit), the Americans don't play Rugby, and until now, their Soccer team was useless. Well with any luck, this signals a change...

Update: Good Grief! Another goal!

This is fantastic... The US would easily be my second team after England... Could be that we'll go out and the USA will stay in, in which case they'll certainly be the ones that I follow :o)

Update2: Now this is an appropriate time to chant "USA! USA!"... ;o)

Update3: Final score, USA 3 - 2 Portugal. Excellent, I'm well proud of the US for that performance :o)

You don't know me....just as I well I suppose :D

OMG...I was watching...

3 fucking 2...

wow...

It's the women's team in disguise!

Has to be...

Either that or Portugal seriously underestimated them *snort*

We won't make that mistake in Argentina...

*shudders*

In all fairness, Portugal probably played better against you ;o)

Well that was a great game and all credit to the USA some amazing football!

Ahem - but I said this would happen when Steve Heighway left Liverpool to go to the US some - ahem - some years ago! ;0)

USA USA USA! Thanks for the support. :0)

Pleasure and indeed credit where credit is due!

Another fantastic game for the irish too! Great day today! :0)

Yay for the American guys!

Its so cool to me to know that the American soccer team has fans in other countries!! That rocks. I was surprised myself to see how well they are playing!! I have revoked my previous "embarassed" sentiments entirely! (by the way I randomly came across your journal by way of... hmmm.. I forget but I must say its a shame you are "not single" or for that matter, that you live in England...) hahaha anyway, we should chat sometime if youre ever bored look me up.

Re: Yay for the American guys!

I definitely support the American team, moreso than most of my friends here. They seem to think that we don't need another sport that the Americans can win at, but that just strikes me as being a rather fearful attitude...

My opinion is this - Soccer is obviously the biggest sport in the world, no other event is as great as the World Cup. So it'd be nice if the Americans did well, because it would encourage them to play it more. Despite how insufferable the victory cheers would be, I'd love for them to win, just so that they play more soccer. At the end of the day, if they play it, and play it well, they get included in a global event, which doesn't happen to the US all that much...

I used to play soccer for long time. Over in the USA, it's more acceptable for a girl to play soccer than a guy. Guys playing soccer here are considered "gay" because of it. I think that's gay because it's a really competative sport. I mean, football, basketball, and baseball is everything to the men over here. Some probably couldn't live without it (how pathetic). Those sports almost take less effort and energy than soccer. Soccer is a very good sport. But the USA will probably never totally accept it as one.

Re: Yay for the American guys!

Soccer is rather like Basketball in a good many ways.... See, the problem is, people seem to think that Soccer and American Football will appeal to the same people, but they won't. American Football is more about territory than possession, whereas Soccer is the other way around. I say, sell Soccer to the Basketball fans... :o)

I think if the US does well in the world cup, they'll accept it more - they'll realise that they have a chance to try to beat the whole world at something, and we all know how much the USA loves that.....

HOLY CRAP! Heh, I just wrote a really good reply and it was shot down with an error. Darn this LJ. Oh well. Basically I said that since the american society has not built/provided stadiums that are easier access to watch soccer games then soccer will forever be stuck in a limbo of not totally being liked but not totally being hated. Soccer is not played by states that I know of like all the other sports so that means we have no pride to put into soccer. It's weird. but yeah.

Re: Yay for the American guys!

I dunno if you really need it played by states though - after all, we have a load of teams around the country, people often don't support their local teams, or indeed any teams anywhere near them, so the pride in your team isn't to do with location.

Of course, we're built on a culture of football, so I guess we don't need the local pride - we inherit our football support from our parents, and if not from then, then it grows on us in school :o)

I like how european countries put so much pride into their teams though. It's really neat. Though some people say it's because you guys don't play any other sports so thats why you do. But I dont think that. WHat other sports do you guys play? DO you play rugby? Isn't that like football. ALso, do you call soccer = football over there or is it just soccer?

Re: Yay for the American guys!

Rugby isn't especially like American Football... It's a little less territory-based as a game, and involves very different styles of play (it's far less stop-start). As for other sports, we play lots of tennis, apparently, along with American Football (we do have several teams nationwide...), field hockey, etc....

And yeah - the game you call "soccer" is called "football" by the rest of the world :o)

Re: Yay for the American guys!

The people here in the States to whom they need to market Soccer is the Hockey crowd. Hockey is exactly like Soccer except on ice with more blood. (Though admittedly the amount of blood is a close call.)

A generation of American soccer players began to evolve in the mid-1980s in the northern midwest. It has spread from there. I happened to be part of one of the first larger youth soccer leagues while I lived in Minnesota. After that it really got going, and car companies even market certain vehicles to "soccer moms."

Re: Yay for the American guys!

Ah, Hockey, I was forgetting that.... Yeah, it's certainly a lot like Hockey, moreso than Basketball.

I just hope the number of people interested in soccer keeps growing - it'd really help the US integrate more into world sports...

soccer moms are horrible. They're the true blue example of feminists "let's all hate men because their evil cheating lying dogs" with their carpooling kids on the way to soccer practice van watching opera winfrey and rosie o'donnell and praising clinton for all of the "wonderful" things he's done. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. Soccer mom's = evil.

A New Found Glorys new song "My Friends Over You" is a good.

Re: Yay for the American guys!

That's funny. My Mom was one of the first Soccer Moms, and she has never been a feminazi (though always a feminist). Of course Dad was one of our coaches...

Re: Yay for the American guys!

Of course, we were living in the Socialist Republic of Minnesota, so even their moderate Republican stance was considered crazy conservative there...
