So, memories and stuff...
2012

I went shopping earlier... Here's two similar accounts of how it went, and see if you can spot the difference...

Version 1
So, left the house, turned left, and walked a short way up the road, and followed it around the corner. Walked along, going past the garages where people on the other side of the road keep their cars, past Middle Way, and to the other side of the hill. Walked down some way, and then turned left into Lacemakers. Went up through the alley there, into Benwells, and walked along there. Walked up whatever the Hell that road is called, and through the next alley, to Oakley Road. Walked down Oakley road to get to the supermarket, where I bought various things...

Version 2
So, left the house where I've lived for 13 years of my life, turned left, and walked a short way up the road. This is the road I learned to roller skate on, the road I learned to skateboard on. Across the road is where my old best friend Adam lives - I used to be over there most evenings back in primary school. Anyhow, I followed the road up past his house and followed it around the corner. Walked along where I used to go bike riding, going past the garages where we used to take a shortcut through the estate on bikes, and where we used to hang out sometimes. Then walked past Middle Way which is the road on which my other best friend from primary school, Dan, lives. It's also the steepest road on the estate, and the one we were scared of when roller skating and stuff. Walked on past Matt Wilson's house to the other side of the hill. Walked down some way, where I used to go skateboarding the most because of the long smooth pavement, and then turned left into Lacemakers. This is the road I lived in from the age of 6 months (I think) until I was 6 years old. We had a slide in the back garden, and I can still remember the layout of the place. We had only one bathroom, upstairs, but when my parents moved in it was just them and me, so that was more than adequate. Went up through the alley there, looking over the wall over into the garden I used to play in as a toddler, and up into Benwells. I walk over the spot where, as a young child, I fell over and hit my head on the pavement - I can still remember that too, it bloody hurt. This is the route I used to take to pre-school when I was really little. I turn left and walk along a road whose name I haven't been able to remember since I was a lot younger. Rider's Way or something? Then I turn right and go down the next alley - there are birds in the trees that line it, and to the right there are old gardens that have just overgrown completely, that I used to be able to see when I'd come down here 10 years ago and more. I finally get to Oakley Road, and walk down to where there used to be a small gas station, and a load of garages. My friend Dan's father used to have a business here, until the supermarket shafted him out of it, but that's another story. Anyhow, so I go in, and get shopping....

It's funny what a difference a bit of nostalgic detail makes...
