It's coming home..
2012

I've been working out the World Cup game schedule, trying to work out which games I'm actually interested in.. Sadly, unlike 1998, I can't aim to watch every single game (which I very nearly did).. GCSEs afforded me a certain flexibility which it's been hard to capture since..

I've narrowed it down, I think.. The first match kicks off at 5pm, so I'll only get to watch the second half, but I don't have a radio in my mp3 player for nothing.. Other than the opening match, I have very specific interests. The important games are those featuring England, Sweden, Holland, Brazil or the USA. Additionally, the final games in Groups B and E are important, since they may determine the finishing positions of England and the USA..

As far as who I'm supporting to win the whole tournament, that would have to be the USA.. I supported them last time when they got to the quarter finals, largely because they have so little home support, and I felt kind of sorry for them.. This time I actually want them to win, and would support them against England if it came down to it (though it would require both teams to make it to the semi-finals, if I'm reading the fixtures correctly).

As for Brazil, I've bet on them to score nil points. 25p says they'll score 0-1 goals (for a win of £60+), a further 50p says they'll score 2-3 goals (to win £40+). It's not impossible - in 2002 France didn't score a single goal, and crashed out at the bottom of their group. I think I also bet a further 75p on England scoreing 0-1 goals (for £30+).. All in all, that's £1.50, for potential winnings of up to £100, which isn't bad. I mean, it's unlikely, but it hardly represents uncontrollable gambling or anything :o)

On a more serious gambling note, I've put a few quid on each of the USA's games, betting that they won't win. That way I'm happy either way.. Every major tournament for the past few years, I've bet on my favourite teams losing so as to make money in the event of emotional distress. I made a couple of bob off England going out against Brazil last time, which almost made up for the fact that it was an awful result.. We were getting all ready for a party in the street and everything :o(

Ah, 'tis all good.. I'm getting rather excited really, 17 days to go...
