Okay, this is possibly gross, and/or cruel, depending on how you look at it..

This evening's task has been the ongoing struggle between myself, and the colony of Drosophila melanogaster that have taken residence in the fruit bowl on my desk. I'm loosely aware that Eri told me to throw away the contents several weeks ago, but I've had things on my mind..

Anyway, it all came to a head this evening when three of them took off and began what I can only describe as an invasion of my airspace. Much like in Iraq, containment was no longer an option. And, much like in Iraq, I decided that the best way forward would be to kill anything that moves, and declare a victory for democracy.

Obviously moving the fruit bowl would be an invitation for them all to get the Hell out of Dodge, so the first order of business was to somehow keep them there. Since my War on Insects borrows much inspiration from the War on Terror, I elected to imprison them, Guantanamo style, by putting a plastic bag over the fruit bowl. The next problem was then that they could still escape through the bottom of the bag, and through the holes, so I selotaped the entire thing up.

Then to subdue them - previously (a-level biology), we ethered a large number of drosophila, but alas I have no ether.. Instead, I used Lynx Phoenix, available from all good chemists, to render them unconscious. I filled the bag with it, and waited for them to all fall down. To be honest, I'm not sure if it was lethal, though I'm confident there will be more eggs in any event, so it's hardly genocide..

There are no longer any drosophila left clinging onto the bag, at any rate.. Now all that remains is to see what's left, and relocate them outside...

Ummm. There's fly/wasp type spray in the cupboard under the kitchen sink :p

Of everyone who lives in that house, I think we both know Jamie's the least likely to know that *grins*. Although, to be fair I wouldn't have had the first clue either...

Now usually, I'd agree whole-heartedly, but he was with me from the time it was bought to the time it was used to the time it was put in the cupboard ;)

good luck in your quest!
