To Kill a Conversation
.. the art of scoring points by being boring on IRC

Points begin accumulating after one of these conditions has been satisfied:
  1. 10 minutes of silence in the channel
  2. 15 minutes in which only one person has been talking
These values can be scaled to reflect the typical level of activity in the channel, but should maintain the 1:1.5 ratio.

If Condition 1 is met, award 2 points to the last person who said anything, provided their last statement meets all the following conditions:
  • A conversation was occuring
  • The last thing they said was related to the topic being discussed
  • At least one other participant in said conversation is not marked as being away (somebody has to have been capable of continuing the conversation)
  • At least one other participant in the conversation did not recently express an interest in changing the subject
In the event that some of these conditions are not met, then no points are awarded.

If Condition 2 is met, award 2 points to the person who conducted the monologue, provided the following further conditions are met:
  • A conversation was occuring
  • The monologue must start on-topic - that is to say, they must have had a relevant contribution to start with
  • At least one other participant in the prior conversation is not marked as being away (somebody has to have been capable of continuing the conversation)
  • At least one other participant in the prior conversation did not recently express an interest in changing the subject
In the event that some of these conditions are not met, no points are awarded.

We define a conversation as being a scenario where at least two people have been discussing a single topic, in excess of ten lines in length. It is important to note that if (for example) seven lines are said, and another contributor says another four and in doing so kills the conversation, this is not valid. A conversation must have been taking place before the killer blow is struck (though the killer himself can have been participating in it).

Once points have begun to accumulate, one further point is awarded for every five minutes the conversation stays dead.

A conversation is deemed alive again as soon as another participant in the channel says something.

The following multipliers are used to calculate final score:
  • 1.5x: The killer of the conversation took a tangent from the topic which (while still relevant) was not a direction the others wished to go in
  • 2x: If the above happened, and the tangent was sexual (not cumulative with the previous rule)
  • 1.5x: More than 4 people were discussing the topic of the conversation before it was killed
  • 2x: More than 8 people were discussing the topic of the conversation before it was killed (not cumulative with previous rule)
  • .. uh, I'll remember the others in a minute
These are calculated after the event. When the result is not a whole number, the result is always rounded down to the previous whole number. Per conversation death, a limit of 20 points may be awarded. Any result above this is reduced automatically to 20.

You get 20 points just for writing all that.

I've finished my degree. It's mandatory for me to waste time. And this is very much wasting time, right? :o)
